Over 200 lives lost, over 500 wounded, and 75+ days of road closures—Kurram is gripped by a dire humanitarian crisis. The district, already reeling from sectarian violence and neglect, now faces extreme isolation and starvation.
Yesterday, a food convoy meant to alleviate suffering was reportedly destroyed by the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), allegedly with support from elements within the Pakistan Army (VoicePK, EFSAS).
The TTP's resurgence has compounded the plight of Kurram’s people. Once curtailed through military operations, the group has regained strength due to a mix of state complacency and alleged alliances between militant groups and certain army factions (Critical Threats, CTC West Point).
Adding to the suffering, the Thall-Parachinar Road, a critical lifeline for supplies and medical aid, remains blocked due to poor governance and insecurity (VoicePK, Dawn). This blockade has isolated Kurram from much-needed resources, leaving thousands on the brink of starvation.
The Haqqani Network's influence in Kurram and its ties to militant operations in Afghanistan have further destabilised the region (CTC West Point, Gov.UK). Despite multiple military operations claiming to secure the area, residents continue to face violence, economic deprivation, and neglect (Pure DIIS, EFSAS).
Why the Silence?
The silence of authorities and the international community is deafening. This humanitarian crisis is exacerbated by systemic failures and alleged complicity, yet global leaders remain disengaged. The people of Kurram are starving, isolated, and under siege.
